Current Issues

  1. General: The most important potential development in our area is the University of Pretoria Precinct Project (UP3), based on strategies developed by major universities in the USA to address spreading urban decay in their vicinity. Interestingly, one of the factors identified as promoting urban decay in the US is monotonous student accommodation around campuses. This is a major issue in our context, as well and some developers are reluctant to think laterally or engage with communities.

  2. Heritage: Graham Dominy attended the SAHRA Heritage Colloquium on 15 September 2016, with the aim to link-up with Johannesburg heritage organisations to develop a province-wide strategy. In Tshwane, we are working with the Pretoria Institute of Architects (PIA), the Heritage Association of SA (Formerly Van Der Stel Foundation) and other interested parties on specific cases and to develop a broader strategy.

  3. Old Pretoria City Hall: The new mayor has ordered an investigation into the tender for the renovation of the old City Hall. This will also address the roof tiles issue.

  4. Caledonian Stadium: The new mayor has given this amenity a reprieve.

  5. Union Buildings: As a national heritage site, SAHRA is now investigating demolitions on the site. No progress on the long-standing non-functioning clock mechanism/bells.

  6. Hatfield School Redevelopment: Developers are being co-operative and proactive.

  7. Ex-US Peace Corps Complex, Sunnyside: The matter is to proceed to Appeal Tribunal.

  8. Indian High Commission Boundary Wall: Appeal to be formally lodged with Gauteng MEC once a formal response from PHRA-G is received.

  9. Long-term Mission: Build partnerships with other organisations and integrate heritage policies.
